The currency of discipline

Hill sprints on a Monday. was joined by 2 of my children, Quincy and Hero and my friends @reece_allen_ and @conorcure

As I transition from the slower, hibernation period that the peak winter brings (I usually feel this post winter solstice), I feel it’s time to tap into the currency of discipline. For me, discipline is a resource best used sparingly and wisely, as I juggle the balance between preparation and exuberance over the rhythm of the seasons. Spring and Summer practice is less structured as it’s hard *not* to be outside moving and practicing more spontaneously. So in the later stages of winter, once I’ve finished embracing slowing down and not doing much at all, more intentional and structured practice is usually needed. Basically I “train” more during this time as frankly, during the warmer months… I’ll be too busy enjoying “doing the thing” instead of preparing for it. So that’s my intention right now, very simple: one sprint session and another strength session once a week, to supplement my usual regular practice. I’ll see how it goes 😆

When the thought of winter training I want benefits from is challenging in regards to motivation - I’m grateful for company. So thank you to my awesome kids and friends.

On another note: I am proud to see my kids join in our hill sprint training sessions with no prompting, and it is even more rewarding to see that my values and those of my friends are having a positive effect on them. From a young age, I have tried to be aware of my own agenda vs simply getting out of the way of letting them just be. For example I resist the urge I get to “coach” them (when they want my opinion, I will and do gladly give it) and I do my best to instead model and set an example, as after all what you do resonates more deeply than what you say. I am glad to see that me running up a hill with my friends, climbing trees and general rough and tumble play as adults is already normalised in their lives, as our ethos continues to permeate and influence their connection with movement.
